Today was the day! Ollie hadn't been well versed in Anne Duval or her particular field of study until he had caught wind of the expedition, but now that he was here, he was thrilled to be part of this new adventure. This was the first time he had been out to Llynmere Lake, and the dazzle of the sun upon the calm water thrilled him.
"Come on, Landfall, let's hurry!" he said, throwing his pack down and doing a rudimentary job of unpacking (he opened the pack and pulled out a couple of items at the very top). There was no time to waste.

He listened carefully to Anne Duval's explanation of the plants they sought, and when the group broke to begin the hunt for these various plants, he gave Landfall a happy pat and pointed toward the lake. "Let's start searching along there," he said. The Hound looked up at him with adoring eyes and let out a happy woof.
They dashed toward the lake's edge together, and Landfall promptly stuck her nose into the water, sniffing at it happily. Ollie chuckled. "I don't think the plants will be IN the water, Landfall," he said, making his way toward an opening in the grass.

The more the searched, the more energized they both seemed to become, feeding off each other's enthusiasm as they poked their way through groves and brush along the river's edge. "I'm not the only one who wants to do more of this, right?" Ollie said aloud, to which Landfall perked her ears and wagged her tail happily. He took that as an affirmative. "Good. I figured you'd love this!" Spending some quality time together, away from the other two Hounds at home, seemed to make Landfall terribly happy. She certainly wouldn't complain about a few more hours out in the wild.

By now, Landfall had taken the opportunity to jump into the lake for a swim and had emerged sopping wet. She'd even come over to fling water droplets all over Ollie - something he took with a laugh. The Hound now busied herself rolling about in the grass to dry herself off, and Ollie went to go give her a vigorous belly rub when something shiny caught his eye.
"What's this?" he said, picking up the tag and giving it a careful examination. "Oh! It's a Berdir hunt tag!"
Wonderful. He pocketed the tag, making a mental note to take Landfall out for some hunt training when they returned home.

12 Hound hound's ears perk, and they turn towards the woods, as if they've heard something...
Having toweled herself off using the grass, Landfall was up on her feet again in a flash. She nuzzled up against Ollie happily, then suddenly perked her ears in the direction of the woods.
"You hear something?" Ollie asked, rising to his feet to follow her as she trotted off to follow whatever sound had piqued her interest. "That's not where the herbs are meant to be though, Landfall!"
Still, he trudged after her, happy to follow her instincts as they conducted their search of the area. Who knew what she might uncover, after all. There was much daylight left.

9 Just up hill from the lake shore your handler spots a grouping of herbs. Receive a Ynnisi plant.
They charged enthusiastically into some shrubs, but after a while, it became evident that whatever had caught Landfall's attention was gone. "Don't worry about it, good girl," he said, rubbing her ears as she sniffed about in search of her target.
"Come on, let's head back to the clearing. There were some plants I spotted on our way in here that might be useful to Anne."
The hound let out a soft little whine that Ollie thought sounded like disappointment. "We've got lots of time left, we'll find something interesting yet!" he reassured her, turning to return to the water's edge.

11 Your handler can hear something in moving around up in the woods, but can't see anything through the thick undergrowth.
As they left the more overgrown area, Ollie thought he heard some more sound behind them. He paused, turning his shoulders back slowly the way they had come, hoping not to frighten off whatever had made the noise.
"Shhhh," he said quietly to Landfall, who took his cue and stopped, peering back behind her as well. They stayed that way for a few moments, then Ollie shrugged. "False alarm again, I guess." He pointed toward the water. "Gone on, let's get back there! We'll snag a few more herbs before the sun sets, I reckon." Landfall bounded ahead with glee.

4 Your Hound bounds off down the shore, and returns with a pieces of trash. You pick it up, to help keep the area clean.
She charged straight back into the water, undoing all of the hard work she had done earlier to dry off. After a few moments of paddling around, she emerged from the water again and took off, zooming up and down the shoreline with a frenetic energy. It took her several moments to settle down again, but when she did, she grabbed whatever she could reach first with her jaws and brought it proudly over to Ollie.
"Ah," he said with a laugh. "Some trash. Thank you for being a good citizen, Landfall." He added it to his pile. Better to pick it up than leave it behind.

20 - Event! Your handler stumbles across a very large, very strange animal print in the soft lake mud ... Submit a claim to investigate further!
He had just finished stuffing the trash into his bag when something else caught his eye - something... big. Something he had never seen before.
"Whoa..." he said, crouching down to touch the print with one hand. "Something big was here."
Peering closer, he tried to inspect the edges and picture what could possibly have left this behind. A predator of some sort? Or just some very large, gentle creature he had yet to encounter. Ollie couldn't tell.
"Alright Landfall, let's proceed with caution. We don't know how close this thing is, or how friendly it is." He beckoned to the Hound. Better keep her close.

Feeling a little like he was doing something potentially quite stupid, Ollie rose to follow the tracks, heading away from the lake and into the woods. Landfall seemed unusually subdued and careful as she followed dutifully behind him, pausing to sniff once in a while as they tracked the footprints.
"Hey, look at this," Ollie said eventually, dropping down to pick up what looked like pellets, with bits of fur clinging to them. "This looks like... it was once upon a time part of an animal." He showed the item to Landfall, who peered at it curiously.
"Come on, maybe someone knows what this is."

Ollie's discovery causes quite a stir among those who are still at the base camp. No one is exactly sure where the pellet has come from, but there's lots of excited chatter and whispers. Ollie ends up leading several expedition members out to where the pellet was found.

6 -- Your handler finds a little creek in the woods.
Having caused quite a stir in the camp, Ollie was more than happy to lead the other expeditioners back to the site of his discovery. There was an unmistakable thrum of energy, driven by the revelation of something so new and unexpected. It energized him. After leaving some of the others by the tracks, he and Landfall continued their own search, hoping to find another glimpse of whatever they had discovered.
But the rest of their search proved uneventful, perhaps even a little fruitless. After the initial high of discovering those strange footprints, it was hard not to feel a little disappointed. Harder still to admit that they weren't going to find more hints as to this creature's whereabouts. But searching was hard work, and they had been out all day, going at full steam.
"Come on, Landfall, we've been out a good long while," Ollie said, peering at the sun. Its warmth was starting to fade as well, now that it was getting ever closer to the horizon, and he didn't fancy a trek back to camp in the dark and possible chill once it was gone. "We made some great discoveries today. We'll have to keep an eye out for more opportunities like this."
