Hilda had to admit that she wasn't a fan of the weather she'd experienced on this journey so far. The farther they traveled, the more the mist and the drizzling rain seemed to cling to them like a haunting, refusing to let up or turn into the downpour she'd learned to expect from living in Ynnis. She wasn't sure if she'd be allowed to see the sun for the rest of this trip.
Neither Knife nor Mud seemed to mind. Now that the group had stopped for a rest, both hounds were running around the beach, spraying damp sand and nipping at each other's heels. They smelled wet, but then so did everyone else's hounds, so Hilda supposed it was fine. She rested in the branches of a sturdy looking tree and watched them be young, excited hounds in peace.

While she rested, Mud found a clump of kelp that had washed ashore. Hilda jolted, but she wasn't fast enough to stop the brindled wire from rolling around in the stinky weed. By the time she'd made it, Mud was stinkier than ever before and covered in sand and pieces of slimy green kelp, but she looked excited about it, at least. Knife, for his part, seemed equally excited that his companion was now reeking.
Hilda grumbled, but collected some of the drying kelp anyways. It could be useful for boiling down later. She just wished it smelled a little better.

Unable to settle back into her resting spot, Hilda led her two hounds down the beach slowly. Despite the drizzling and the rocks, the sound of the waves crashing to shore was still pretty relaxing, and she was getting used to being vaguely damp.
Ahead, both Mud and Knife had stopped to sniff at something... fuzzy? She frowned, hopeful that there wasn't some poor hound pup abandoned on the beach. Thankfully, when she finally caught up to them she discovered that it was only the remains of a duskrat, in good enough condition that she could make use of it. Better that she take it than it go to waste.

Hilda led her hounds closer to the edge of the forest, peering in through the trees. Alice had heavily implied they should be keeping their eye out for new game species. So far, the only evidence of any game they'd found was the duskrat, but with so many ferns and the tall, protective canopy, surely they was something more interesting around.
As if she'd summoned something with her thoughts, some ferns just a few yards away rustled, moving away from them quickly. Mud's ears perked up, and she went tearing toward the sound. Knife followed quickly on her heels, barking loudly.

Both Mud and Knife were gone in a flash, but Hilda followed behind slower, looking down at her surroundings. It was tough to see through the dense ferns, but she kept going in the same direction until she came upon a small clearing, where finally she could see some footprints. They were small, with three toes, and ended abruptly. Three toes? Hilda couldn't think of what that could be. A new species, maybe?
After a moment, Mud and Knife came trailing back, tongue lolling but otherwise empty-handed. Obviously whatever it was had been tricky enough to get away from them. How strange.

Hilda and the hounds spent a few more minutes rustling through the ferns for any additional signs of the creature they'd lost, but when she couldn't find even another set of footprints, Hilda eventually gave up and led her hounds back out to the beach.
If she couldn't find something new, she'd at least keep collecting something old and useful. She trailed along the edge of the water, collecting kelp as it washed ashore in long, slimy tendrils. She spent more time fighting to keep Mud and Knife from rolling in it than she did actually collecting, but she did still find a good batch that she could use later.

As she was collecting kelp, Knife suddenly became attentive to the water. Hesitant to jump into the salty waves, he stood in the sand with his ears pricked and whined pitifully at the water. Hilda came up beside him to see what he found, and quickly realized he was alerting at a small group of Trifin Eels.
They were hunting minnows in the shallows, swimming around each other in mesmerizing ribbons of color. Most of the shoal looked to be juveniles, but there were a few plump adults scattered throughout. Maybe they could take just a short break to try to catch some dinner...

It was hard to tell, but Hilda was pretty sure the sun was getting close to setting. She was disappointed she was running out of time and hadn't found anything truly new to the area yet, though she had her suspicions that whatever footprints she found belonged to something she'd never seen before.
She had turned herself and her hounds around to start their journey back to the campsite when something nestled between the roots of a tree caught her attention. It was a single, pale mushroom she'd never seen before. Carefully, she plucked it and examined it closer. It was new! Thank gods, she'd finally found something interesting.

Just before returning to the campsite for the night, Hilda decided to take one more look into rocky shallows. Mostly, there were more minnows seeking the safety of the turmultuous, shallow waves that lapped the shore. But there, just in the shadows of the dying light, another shoal of Trifin Eels was lurking.
As the ocean sucked waves back in, the small minnows were rushed out into deeper water, and the predatory eels would snap them up, one by one. It was interesting to watch them work. But Hilda was a skilled predator herself, and their small catch from earlier wouldn't been enough for dinner tonight. She'd hunt just a few of these eels so she and Mud and Knife could eat well.
