Itona is a gaslamp fantasy type setting, set at a similar technology level as the gilded age. Itona itself has been settled for approximately 500 years. Previous to settlement no humanoids lived on the continent, but it was home to Hound, berdir and other creatures. Other continents, collectively called the Old World, have been settled for 10,000 to 50,000 or so years.
Steam carriages have been invented in the last decade, and are only seeing widespread use in the past few years. Previous to the invention travel between cities was incredibly rare and challening, and was typically only undertaken by merchants or those intentionally immigrating to other cities. Itona is set in an entirely different universe than Earth, though it has several analogous species.
Hounds are a critical part of Itonan culture. They are used for work, companionship, profit and entertainment. Most Itonans own a Hound, many own multiple. Hounds are most commonly used as hunting companions.
