[Expedition] Glimmer Creek Bonus Prompt
When Ollie arrived back in camp with Roadstead, Sunshower, Icarus and Catamaran in tow, others on the expedition were also in the process of drifting back in, each bringing stories of their own adventures and encounters out in the wild. Everyone had seen such different things, but the consensus was clear - Glimmer Creek was indeed a great source of ore.
Feeling quite pleased to have made some small discoveries, and even more pleased that those discoveries were corroborated by others, Ollie was delighted with how the trip had turned out. No doubt they would be back to uncover more of those secrets! But for now, they still had some time to explore the valley.
And reports of a wild hound in the area certainly had him intrigued. From the description, she seemed lovely, able to blend in with the greenery around her. Bramble, he thought in his head. That's how he'd refer to her.
"I think the cave would be quite interesting to see, wouldn't you?" he said aloud to the dogs. Sunshower was lounging at his feet with Roadstead by her side. Those two hardly ever went anywhere without the other. The orange hound lifted her head in response to his words and rose to her feet, sensing that they were about to take off again.
"Icarus! Catamaran!" Ollie called the two younger hounds back to his side. They had been off making friends with some other hounds, but seemed happy to oblige at the sound of his voice. "Come on, we're heading back out! We've got to go see the cave!"
The four of them headed back out from base camp, walking in the opposite direction of where they had originally explored. Ollie's hope was that they would be able to see more of the valley. He didn't want to say it aloud, but he had felt eyes on him at some point during the trip, and was curious to see if it was the very wild hound that had been sighted by Naomi.
"I sure hope we run into Bramble," he said as they trekked. Sunshower and Roadstead would do well with a chance encounter, but he wondered how Icarus and Catamaran would fare. They were younger, more boisterous, less well trained. Ollie hoped they wouldn't do anything to spook a wild hound.
As sight of base camp disappeared from view again, the four of them settled into a nice trekking rhythm, looking for the cave. He had just spotted the entrance when suddenly, Ollie paused. There it was, he felt like he was being watched. His hounds all seemed to notice it as well, perking up with curiosity in the same direction.
And then, he saw her, a magnificent chocolate brindle, blending it so well with the vegetation around her that he might have missed her had it not been for a bit of movement in her tail.
"Oh wow," Ollie breathed, hardly daring to move. All of them stopped. Roadstead and Sunshower sat down. Icarus and Catamaran stay standing, their excitement and energy only barely contained, and only because they were both very good boys. Bramble stared at them, head high, wary, unsure what to make of their little group.
And then, a wind blew through, perhaps the wrong way, perhaps the right way. Whatever it was, that wind was enough to send the hound off into the brush again. She was gone in a blink. One of the hounds let out a little whine, and Ollie felt himself remembering to exhale.
"Whew," he said, giving each hound a pat for being so good. "She's gone. Let's go to the cave. Maybe she'll be back when we come out."
They closed the short distance to the entrance of the cave, and Ollie led them in, explore around in search of the different types of ore they could collect and return to base camp. All the while, he was thinking of Bramble, the first truly wild hound he had ever seen. There was something different about her, an energy that felt quite unlike the domesticated hounds by his side.
After a quick sweep of the cave, Ollie gathered Roadstead, Sunshower, Icarus and Catamaran back at his side.
"This has been quite a day, hasn't it?" he said to the lot of them as they left the cave and began the trek back to base camp. All the while he kept throwing glances this way and that, hoping to catch one more quick glimpse of Bramble. But he knew he wouldn't. That was okay, for now.
