City Zen

There are several hundred things Lim would rather be doing with their day than dealing with beurocracy.

Some things are unavoidable when seeking a new life amongst civillized folk, however, and Lim has found that beurocracy is one of those things. Another of those things is people, and a lot of them.

Ynnis is a port city, bustling with activity. Sailors and merchants, citizens and visitors, several dogs with coats too fine and builds too healthy to be anything but kept by people. Salt and sea brine covers up most of the city's scents, the breeze washing in from the ocean to flow between Ynnisi streets. It's a cooler breeze than Lim is used to, but the sun is warm on their fur and they find they can't bring themself to mind the difference in climate at all.

Lim sighs under their breath, closing their eyes and allowing themself to bask in the elements for just a few more moments. They know the sooner they deal with the paper things, the sooner they can stop having to think about that nonsense. Alas, that knowledge fails to make any of it feel all that more appealing.

They make a vague attempt to blend in with a handful of other newcomers, some Lim recognises from their own journey and others that are wholly new to them. No one that Lim knows on any kind of peronal level.

Lim casts a wary glance at their neighbours' feet. One good thing about cities is that most of the hoofless folk wear shoes. Most of them.

Lim keeps a wary distance from a person with lithe, delicate catspaws. Thinking too hard about all those tiny little phlanges fills Lim with a deep and terrible unease.

There are only a couple of speaking people out today, Lim notes. Their eyes drift to the closest, a person standing over a elaborate model proclaiming the wealth and virtue of Azzaru, Ynnis' neighbouring city if Lim recalls correctly. For a little while, Lim listens to the pitch. But their eyes catch on the snowy mountain, they hear the word "mines" and abruptly loses all interest.

Lim thinks, somewhat unfavourably, that while a mining city might be a nice place to visit every once in a while, it sure doesn't sound at all like the kind of place Lim wants to actually live in.

So, Lim slips away, turning their attention to the only other option (of the day, at least); the person who's pitching for Ynnis. Their tone is warm as they speak, and though not all of their points land (Lim's not all that into seafood), most of them hit a little too close.

For a long moment, Lim hesitates, considers coming back tomorrow or the day after, delaying for as long as the authorities will let them, but —

Lim has always liked the coast, always had a soft spot for cities that are a melting pot of different peoples. Knowing that, Ynnis is far from the worst choice. Knowing that, Lim has little doubt they won't regret it.
